In September of 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published a series of cartoons depicting Muhammad with images of modern terrorism. The newspaper’s publishers stated that they wanted to bring issues of censorship forward into public debate. Various Muslim leaders called for protests; the result was violence that claimed over 100 lives.

This appearance by Flemming Rose will offer the university community an opportunity to hear the cultural editor of this publication state why he made the decision to publish these cartoons, what issues were at stake in the decision, and the meaning of the protests and the violence that followed.

Flemming Rose, cultural editor of Jyllands-Posten, is a journalist with long experience in European, Russian, and American issues. He has been awarded the "Free Speech Award" from the Danish Free Press Society.
